21 May 2014 : Brenda King- Head of the Textile Society
Our
speaker was Dr. Brenda King, Chair of the Textile Society - She took us on a visual journey around Leek and its surrounding churches, looking at
embroidered altar pieces designed by 3 architects. The embroideries were
carried out by Lady Elizabeth Wardle and the ladies from the Leek Embroidery
School which she founded. She was the wife of Sir Thomas Wardle who developed a
method for dyeing Tussah silk from India which she incorporated into some
of the magnificent pieces. Dr. King is currently working on a book which will hopefully be published later this year.
