Rob Wilson- November 2012

As part of our 21st birthday celebration, we were thrilled to be joined by Whaley Bridge based artist Rob Wilson for a true masterclass of his mixed media work. Rarely do we see an artist create & virtually complete a piece of work within the meeting time. The speed at which Rob worked was phenominal (this was his norm!). From the initial pencil to canvas, adding paint, through to the addition of print & paper to create more layers & texture. Then just as he was about to add the final phase of stitch he proceeded to cut up the canvas into manageable pieces- can you imagine our horror!!!!

However we need not have worried as his final compositions of the urban landscape are truly amazing. My inspirational phrase of the evening was ' Don't be precious, just let go'

Happy 21st Birthday- November 2012

From humble beginnings in a barn, Chelford Embroiderers Guild has grown in to an active & thriving throng of stitchers. It was also a pleasure to see some of our founding members at our anniversary meeting on the 21st November as well as a good membership turnout, 21 years exactly to the actual date.
Happy Birthday to us!

Annette Emms Workshop October 2012

After a dreamy night a group of Chelford ladies returned for Annette's workshop to try & recreate those irresistible boots and by looking at these images of the day I suspect those fairies & pixies may come calling soon! Who now says they don't believe?

Annette Emms- October 2012

Exquisite, absorbing, magical, delightful just some of the many superlatives which covered Annette Emms talk 'Hidden Paths & Legends' . She told us how the world of fairies, pixies & moonbeams began & how these translated into her beautiful work of books & the creation of the famous pixie boots.

Cupcake Crazy at Young Embroiderers

We all went cupcake crazy at yesterday's young embroiderers' group. We started off by making these yummy cupcakes out of suffolk puff and felt ball. In the afternoon we did some printing using polstyrene sheets and finished off with a cupcake to eat as a reward fo all the hard work.

Sheila Smith Felting July 2012

We have certainly finished off this year on a high point with a talk and workshop by Sheila Smith. Her talk on Wednesday evening was very inspirational and was really well attended. Those lucky enough to  obtain a place on her workshop on Thursday had a wonderful time creating a piece of textured felt using the shibori method.

Young Embroiderers 10th April 2012

Young designers at work
We had a brilliant time at the Young Embroiderers meeting on Tuesday  as Jordan Hargreaves and Michele Friswell who are  embroidery students from MMU came to our meeting to show us contemporary hand stitching techniques.. We started off by creating an unique surface to stitch into using 'Di- Stix' fabric crayons. These can be used either by drawing a design onto paper and transferring it to the fabric by ironing or cna be used directly onto the fabric.

The finished results- some lovely cushions
We then used a variety of hand- stitching techniques to decorate the work which we later made into cushions .
We got some lovely results
As you can see the the results were stunning!

Marion Anniss March 2012

Marion Anniss came to speak to us this month. She delighted us with detail about her awe and wonder series which was inspired by Norwich Cathedral.

Marion Anniss Awe and Wonder series
History is usually the starting point for Marion's research -" the architecture, artefacts, wall and floor decorations of old buildings - get me sketching or photographing, and I take these images into designs. I review my observational drawings, sketches and experiments looking for patterns and shapes which I manipulate digitally. I am searching for images that will work as backgrounds for my textile pieces."History is usually the starting point for Marion's research -" the architecture, artefacts, wall and floor decorations of old buildings - get me sketching or photographing, and I take these images into designs. Pauline Turner - Crochet

Pauline Turner at Chelford Embroiderers' Guild
We don't usually have talks on crochet at our embroiderers' guild so we were really glad that Pauline came talk to us about how crochet has become a part of her life.

We were amazed at the wonderful effects which can be achieved with the crochet hook.
Perhaps this is not all that surprising as Crochet has its root in tambour work.

Jacqueline Hyman January 2012

Jacqueline Hyman provided us with a really interesting talk on the research and restoration she has been carrying out on a collection of medieval children's clothes. The clothes had been excavated from burial sites in Egypt in the 1930's and had been stored in a cardboard box in an archive ever since. when she examined them she realised that they were a very important collection as there is nothing quite like them in other collections. She has been researching into them using her own meticulous methods and modern technology such as the electron microscope which magnifies fibres hundreds of times.

It was a very interesting and informative talk.
